So you want to take flute lessons?
Here's an idea of what to expect:
I enjoy teaching flute lessons to students of all ages and ability levels in addition to performing throughout central and southeastern Pennsylvania. My studio is based in beautiful Lancaster County, not far from Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Although the number of openings in my studio may vary depending on when you wish to begin, I am always interested in meeting enthusiastic, hardworking students!
My teaching style is very positive and open. It is my intent that lessons be an open exchange between teacher and student that grows as the student matures. My goal is that my students will become independent musicians, no matter where their lives take them, and whether they become professional musicians or not!
I most enjoy sharing the joys and benefits of music with my students, bringing my varied experiences as a musician with me. As a studio teacher, I focus on helping each student find their individual strengths while developing all aspects of their playing and helping students build the connections between the discipline of studying classical music and every day life.
I focus on teaching music in the classical genre, and the personal and musical growth that comes with the study of the flute. Students should expect lessons to involve an inquisitive approach where we develop their critical listening and analysis abilities, as well as time management and practice skills. I focus a great deal on ease of playing, resonant sound and expression through standard and lesser known flute repertoire.
Students are expected to be enthusiastic, prepared for lessons, open to suggestions, and willing to participate in studio activities such as masterclasses and recitals. Students are also encouraged to participate in music festivals and events such as solo and ensemble, which always aid in musical growth. I hope that my students will find friends in the studio, and always be supportive and encouraging to one another!
Lessons are offered in increments of 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on the student's age and ability. Lessons are offered weekly, as consistency is important for musical lessons. Please take a look at my studio policies for more information about lessons!
Teaching Credentials:
My students have participated in ensembles and camps such as the Allegretto Youth Orchestra, Lancaster County Youth Symphony, UW-Whitewater Flute Camp, The Ohio State University Flute Workshop, the Interlochen Summer Camp for the Arts, the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Winds of Wisconsin. Former students have been accepted into Bachelor and Master of Music degree programs at schools such as Penn State University, Messiah College, Western Illinois University, the University of Minnesota, UW-Milwaukee, Central Michigan University and Oklahoma State University. Previously Adjunct Professor of Flute at Maranatha University, I have also taught at Lancaster Bible College, UW-Madison Music Clinic, UW-Whitewater Flute Camp, The Ohio State University Flute Workshop and UW-Waukesha. Currently I teach adjunct college level courses in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In a less traditional setting, I have helped institute the Pocono Flute Society summer Flute Camp, which is geared mostly toward adult hobbyists, by teaching at the week long workshop and contributing to it each year since its inception.
